Shou Wu Li 手五里 (LI 13)

TRANSLATION: Arm Five Miles

LOCATION: Superior to lateral epicondyle of humerus on line joining LI 11 & LI 15, 3 cun above LI 11
NEEDLE INSERTION: 90° insertion
NEEDLE DEPTH: 1.0-1.5 cun

Bi Nao 臂臑 (LI 14)

TRANSLATION: Arm and Scapula
TYPE: Crosses Yang Wei
LOCATION: On line joining LI 11 & LI 15, 7 cun above LI 11 on radial side of humerus, superior to lower end of deltoid and brachialis muscles, about three fifths of the distance along the line drawn between LI 11 and LI 15
NEEDLE INSERTION: 45° insertion
NEEDLE DEPTH: 1.0-1.5 cun

Jian Yu 肩髃 (LI 15)

TRANSLATION: Shoulder Bone
TYPE: Crosses Yang Qiao
LOCATION: Antero-inferior to acromion in upper portion of deltoid
NEEDLE INSERTION: a. 90° w/ arm abducted, insertion directed towards center of the Axilla, b. 20° insertion directed distally towards the elbow
NEEDLE DEPTH: a. 1.0-1.5 cun, b. 1.5-2.0 cun

Ju Gu 巨骨 (LI 16)

TRANSLATION: Great Bone
TYPE: Window of the Sky (debatable)
LOCATION: Upper aspect of shoulder, in depression between acromial extremity of clavicle and scapula spine
NEEDLE INSERTION: 90° or 45°, *Deep medial insertion carries a risk of causing a pneumothorax, particularly in thin patients
NEEDLE DEPTH: 0.5-1.0 cun

Tian Ding 天鼎 (LI 17)

TRANSLATION: Heaven's Vessel
TYPE:  
LOCATION: On lateral side of neck, 1 cun below LI 18, on posterior border of sternocleidomastoid
NEEDLE INSERTION: a. 90° insertion, b. 45 ° insertion, *Deeper needling may puncture carotid artery or jugular vein.
NEEDLE DEPTH: a. 0.3-0.5 cun, b. 0.5-0.8 cun

Fu Tu 扶突 (LI 18)

TRANSLATION: Support the Prominence
TYPE: Window of the Sky
LOCATION: On lateral side of neck, level with tip of Adam's apple- between sternal head and clavicular head of sternocleidomastoid
NEEDLE INSERTION: a. 90° insertion, b. 45° insertion, *Deeper needling may puncture carotid artery or jugular vein.
NEEDLE DEPTH: a. 0.3-0.5 cun, b. 0.5-0.8 cun
